Calle Modelo: All you need to know about Nosara’s biggest public/private alliance.

Date

Nosara will have a Model Street in 2023: Over 600 meters will be intervened, with sidewalks, parking spaces, and pluvial systems.

Work will begin during the second half of April and be complete by the second semester of 2023.

Nosara, Costa Rica. April 2023.

This April will begin the ambitious initiative that will pave and place cobblestone, drains, and sidewalks on the route between Café de París and the entrance to the beach (Area of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge).
The route, with more than 60 businesses and 200 collaborators from different companies, will improve conditions for the local labor force and tourists who boost the economy in the district.

The project will be financed thanks to an ordinary budget item of 70 million colones from the Municipality of Nicoya and the collaboration of neighboring landowners or adjoining businesses. Thanks to this last contribution, the consulting and technical management services will be paid for, as well as the implementation of paved spaces, the drainage system, and the sidewalks.

The Municipality of Nicoya has also earmarked for 2023 the sum of 300 million colones for work on the route between the Rinde Más intersection and the plaza as part of a route improvement plan in the district.

Calle Modelo will have 620 linear meters and 4800 square meters of intervention, distributed in 1800 m2 of asphalt and 3000 m2 of cobblestones. It will also have 26 parking spaces, 496 m2 of sidewalks, and nine pedestrian crossings.

The initiative -announced in November 2021- it’s an infrastructure project that aims to inspire mobility investments in the district by prioritizing the preservation of wildlife and culture from Nosara while improving vehicular traffic conditions by placing the pedestrian as a critical actor within urban mobility.

Design Process

At the beginning of the project, we worked with the firm Gensler, who, in a pro-bono manner, led the investigation and community work sessions to consider all the voices involved.
Gensler carried out more than 70 face-to-face surveys and activities at citizen meeting points, where people could draw or write ideas to design a better space on blackboards.
The results revealed a general desire to preserve the natural appearance and essence of the street, as well as the importance of continuing to improve the stormwater system.
Subsequently, the owners surrounding the street, officials of the Municipality of Nicoya, and representatives of ICE and ASADA Playas de Nosara, among other interested parties, were summoned. This space was vital to delve into the challenges and possibilities of the work.

In August 2022, the interest parties resumed the conclusions of the studies, and the consultant VIDA worked on the design of the work, which is ready to be executed after minimal adjustments.
The technical direction will be in charge of WQG Ingeniería, working together and coordinating with the Technical Unit of Road Management of the Municipality of Nicoya.

Drainage System along the route

In the case of the Nosara Civic Association (NCA), a drainage system was authorized within its property (Public Trails) to try to improve water flow conditions. When leading this project, the NCA promotes urban mobility, facilitates the process, and connects all interested parties.

“This project allows us to demonstrate the strength of the entire Nosara community when it works together. At the Civic Association, we feel very proud to lead a unique public-private alliance in the history of this district, inspiring the new pedestrian-centered mobility projects.”

Bart De Graaf
President NCA

The active role of the NCA for almost 50 years is to coordinate, facilitate and promote spaces of articulation where both government entities and our community actively participate in improving the lives of Nosareños and protecting wildlife.
